Feast of St. George Wednesday-Thursday

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
May the Lord bless you!
Come! Give thanks to God and to our Heavenly Patron, St. George!
We celebrate the founding of the Church built for St. George in his hometown, Lydda on Wednesday evening with Vigil at 6:30 p.m. (confession at 6 p.m.) and Thursday morning with Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m.
This is also the anniversary of the pouring of the foundation of our new Church, as well as the arrival of the relics of St. George which were given to us by Abbot Luke of Holy Trinity Monastery in 2012.
Moreover, it the 29th anniversary of the founding of our parish.
We have much to be thankful for!
Also, yesterday marked the 100th anniversary of the martyrdom of the first priest of the Communist Yoke in Russia, St. John Kochurov (see his life here: https://www.sjksdcma.org/aboutstjohnkochurov)
Our diocese has a wonderful charitable organization named in his honor, the St. John Kochurov Society. It supports Youth, Missions and Monasteries in our diocese.
Please be so kind as to join this wonderful organization. Your support is important to many and will bring great blessings to you!

Stewardship Series – Letter 1

Dear Parishioners,

This letter marks the first of five mailings you will be receiving during the next five weeks. Letters will be sent weekly containing important information about our parish. Every Sunday during these five weeks, a sermon or talk will be given at Liturgy based on these letters. These letters and talks, approved by Fr. Daniel Marshall and our St. George Parish Council, is designed to initiate a stewardship campaign for 2017. It is our hope that everyone who receives these letters will read them carefully, consider the information they present, and, through prayer and reflection, change the manner in which they make their offerings.

This stewardship drive is designed to give us the opportunity to thank God for the blessings He has given to us all. If we profess belief in the Orthodox faith and if we love God, we must demonstrate this through our words and our actions. In Proverbs 3:9-10, we read … “Honor the Lord with your substance and with the first fruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.”

Stewardship involves giving the first fruits of our time, our talents, and our resources for the glory of God. Everything we do at work, at play, and with our families must find us behaving in ways which glorify God. This is not only our duty as Orthodox Christians, it is the way of life which brings us the greatest joy and fulfillment. Our parish provides us with a place to worship and to receive the holy sacraments of the Orthodox faith. For this we must be eternally thankful. Our parish also sponsors activities and programs which raise funds for worthy projects and provide fellowship for our families. Our help and support of these activities is part of what we mean when we use the word stewardship. The goal of this campaign is to help all parishioners realize that the offering of our time, talents, and resources represent a way for us to show our thanks for the blessings God has bestowed on us and on our families. Truly, everything we have is a gift from God.

What does it mean to offer our “first fruits?” We need to understand this particular passage literally. Before we allocate time to our jobs, we must allocate time to worship God. Before we set aside time for movies, golf, or yard work, we must allocate time to serve God and the needs of His church. Before we agree to commitments for the school, sports, and other interest of our children, we need to make sure that there is time in their lives to learn about God’s love. Before we pay our monthly bills, we must set aside a portion of our resources in thanksgiving to God for His many blessings. God wants us to enjoy full and gracefilled lives, but we are called upon to do this by following the Church’s teachings and practices.

Without this kind of commitment to our faith, we might be in danger of being believers in word, but not in deed. God demands from us, His children, total devotion to His word. Every aspect of our lives must be lived in accordance with His teachings. When it comes to our offerings to the church, in many cases, we need to do more to explore God’s true teaching about giving. As we begin this year-long journey together, we ask you to open your minds and your hearts to the possibility of learning information that can transform the way you give to the church. Acquiring this knowledge of God’s teachings will go a long way towards helping us not only know the joy of giving of “the first fruits,” but also knowing how to follow this practice in practical terms and within the context of our busy and pressure packed lives.

Sincerely in Christ,

priest Daniel

A Grim Centennial & Memory Eternal

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
May the Lord bless you!
This past Tuesday marked the 100th anniversary of the Communist revolution in Russia, a grim centennial indeed. We are all called to pray for the millions who suffered and were martyred as a result.
A monument to the victims of the Communist state was recently opened in Moscow, with the participation of Patriarch Kyril and Russian President Putin:
There will be many services and events devoted to this anniversary over the course of this year, such as this one in Chicago: http://www.chicagodiocese.org/news_171103_1.html. In our parish, we will particularly mark these sad events at the feast of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia, February 3-4, 2018. Plans are being made for this weekend with the goal of holding a meaningful local celebration. If anyone in our parish is a relative of these blessed New Martyrs or has personal stories associated with this time, please let me know as soon as possible.
We also extend our condolences to Matushka Bethany Akmolin on the passing of her grandfather, Peter (Bronnie) Stroud, a notable man of faith. May his memory be eternal!
Services are as usual this weekend: Confession at 5:30 p.m. today, followed by Vigil, at 6 p.m. Divine Liturgy on Sunday at 10 a.m.
Sincerely in Christ,
priest Daniel

Wonderful Services & Time Changes!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
May the Lord bless you!
Our parish is hosting a choir conference, so we will be treated to a large, wonderful choir at all our services this weekend!
If you don’t attend Vigil very often, make a particular effort this weekend and you will won’t be disappointed. Many of the conference participants sing in small parishes, so we need to encourage them all through our attendance, particularly on Saturday evening!
To accommodate the conference schedule, we are starting one hour early on Saturday: confession begins at 4:30 p.m. and vigil begins at 5 p.m.
Due to Daylight Saving, move your clocks back one hour Saturday night!

Sunday morning, Liturgy begins at 10 a.m. as usual. As always, please welcome our guests as you would welcome Christ Himself!
Sincerely in Christ,
priest Daniel

Moleben to St. John of Kronstadt & Youth Gathering!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
May the Lord bless you!
Join us Tuesday evening for a wonderful youth gathering, starting at 5 p.m.
All ages are welcome!
We will begin at 5 p.m. with games and activities, followed by a pot-luck supper. Please bring a dish to share!
We will serve a moleben to St. John of Kronstadt at 6:30 p.m.
Kids are encouraged to bring a game or activity they enjoy to play with their friends. No electronics, please.
We will wrap up around 8 p.m.
Sincerely in Christ,
priest Daniel

Dome replaced & Saturday clean-up

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
May the Lord bless you!
Thanks be to God, the dome for the apse has been replaced today; the plan is to finish the flashing tomorrow. Weather earlier in the week slowed this process and, as a result, interior repairs will begin next week. This work will also include repairs in the hallway connecting the Church to the parish hall, where there has been water damage which many of you may have noticed. Please continue your prayers that these repairs be executed properly and fully!
As many of you are aware, our parish will be hosting a choir conference from Nov. 3-5. Organized by our Diocesan Liturgical Music Committee, under the leadership of Larissa Sander along with Fr. Alexander Petrovsky and Kurt Sander, it is an honor for our parish to host this valuable event! Let us all warmly welcome these visitors!
It is just for events like this that we built our new parish and hall — and now we need to polish up our buildings! Join us this Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon to clean the interior of the Church and the Hall. Volunteers have long cleaned these spaces, but since one regular cleaner has moved away, our facility now needs freshening up! Offer a few hours of your time as a gift to God — many hands make light work!
This Saturday is St. Demetrios Saturday; we will serve a general pannykhida at 4:30 p.m. Confession will follow at 5:30 p.m. and then Vigil at 6 p.m. Divine Liturgy is on Sunday at 10 a.m. as usual.
At the instruction of Archbishop Peter, we will be making a special collection at the end of liturgy for those affected by the fires in California, which includes a number of our fellow Orthodox.
Sincerely in Christ,
priest Daniel

Repair work & services

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
May the Lord bless you!
Thanks be to God, our contractor, Bruns, has successfully removed the leaking dome over the apse and replaced it with a new water-tight sub-roof. However, they have not yet replaced the dome and still have two large lifts parked behind the Church over the sidewalk. Please be careful as you drive and walk this weekend! Bruns intends to replace the dome next week and commence interior repairs. May God help all of this to be successfully completed!
Services this weekend are as usual: Confession today at 5:30 p.m., followed by Vigil at 6 p.m. Divine Liturgy tomorrow at 10 a.m., followed by lunch and Church School.
Mark your calendars: we will gather next Saturday morning, Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon to clean the Church and hall. Please join us.
Our parish needs your loving care!
Sincerely in Christ,
priest Daniel

California Fires & services

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
May the Lord bless you!
The Lord is once again humbling us through a natural disaster: wild fires in California. May the Lord protect His people and comfort those who are suffering!
The fires are very near one of our ROCOR parishes, Saints Peter and Paul in Santa Rosa, CA. Four parishioners there have lost their homes to the fires, though the parish is safe and no one has been injured. Please pray for all those affected by the fires and if you are able, make a donation to this local Russian charity which is helping those in need: http://racssf.org/index.php/donate
I will be in Chicago by this evening for diocesan meetings on Friday and the Cathedral Feast Day (Pokrov) on Saturday. We will have a service Saturday night at 6 p.m. as usual, though it will be served without a priest, since I will not arrive back in Cincinnati until late Saturday night. Sunday morning Liturgy will begin at 10 a.m. as usual. To help those who would like to confess, I will begin hearing confession on Sunday at 9:15 a.m.
Sincerely in Christ,
priest Daniel
